Biography

Alfred Smith was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 19 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 5 January 1916 and upon arrival in Egypt was transferred to the 58th Battalion. He was hospitalised for a short time at Serapeum suffering from influenza but in June he was moved to France. It seems he was able to avoid serious wounds or illness although his time in France was interrupted on several occasions by minor illnesses and injuries including myalgia, a septic heel, blistered feet and scabies. After the war he returned to Australia on the Wyreema and disembarked at Melbourne on May 31st 1919.
