Biography

Arthur William Smith (SN 4309) was Ballarat born and at different times attended the Urquhart Street, Redan and Sebastopol State Schools. He enlisted in Ballarat at the age of 18 on July 9th 1915. Single and employed as an Ironmonger, he was stationed with the 14th Battalion with which he embarked from Melbourne on board the Demosthenes in late December. He was admitted to hospital several times for mumps during his overseas service, before he was killed in action in France on September 18th 1918. He is buried at the Bellicourt Cemetery, France.
