Biography

Thomas Gardiner (SN 4204) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old grocer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 14th 1915. Posted to the 14th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 27th and sailed to Egypt. Illnesses caused him to be hospitalised several times during 1916, but in January 1917 he joined his unit in France. On May 31st 1918 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his leg. He was evacuated to hospital in England where his leg was amputated below the knee. He was returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses, disembarked at Melbourne on March 10th 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on January 23rd 1920.
