Biography

Robert Lewis (SN 3822) was born in Ballarat and attended the Urquhart Street State School. He was a 27 year old, unmarried miner when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 9th 1915. He was posted to the 14th Infantry Battalion and departed from Melbourne in late November on board the Ceramic. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 46th Battalion with which he was posted to France in June 1916. Over the next 18 months he spent time in hospital suffering from shell shock and scabies, and was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action at Hamel on July 4th 1918 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Cemetery, France.
