Charles Robert Rooney (SN 3896) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Wendouree and Pleasant Street State Schools. When he enlisted on July 9th 1915 he was a gardener, 21 years of age, and single. He joined the 14th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in November on board the Ceramic. He was transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion and promoted to Sergeant while training in Egypt. He arrived in France in September 1916 and was wounded in action in November, suffering gunshot wounds to the shoulder and head, and was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit at the front in February 1917 but on April 11th 1917 he was killed in action at Bullecourt. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
