Biography

James Berry (SN 4149) was born at Pimpinio near Horsham and was a 21 year old book binder when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 19th 1915. Assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th. Shortly after reaching Egypt, he was transferred to the 46th Battalion with whom he moved to France in June 1916. On September 1st he was wounded when he sustained a mild gunshot wound to his knee, but while recovering he also contracted diphtheria. He was wounded again on October 3rd 1917 when he suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his left leg and arm that rendered him unfit for further active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Corinthic, disembarked on March 3rd 1918 and was discharged on April 20th.
