Biography

Joseph Cannane (SN 4155) was born at St. Kilda but was resident at Brown Hill, Ballarat, when as a 23 year old labourer he enlisted on July 9th 1915. He trained at Ascot Vale and Geelong before joining the 14th Battalion reinforcements. On December 29th 1915 he embarked from Melbourne on the Demosthenes and in early 1917 he was posted to the 4th Machine Gun Company in France. He served through the war without major incident, although he was hospitalised with illness in early 1919. He returned to Melbourne on May 18th 1919, disembarking from the Armagh. He died in February 1942 at the age of 49.
