Biography

Joseph Cannane was born in St Kilda, VIC but enlisted from Ballarat with the 14th Battalion, 13th Reinforcement on 9 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. He trained at Ascot Vale and Geelong before joining the 14th Battalion reinforcements. On December 29th 1915 he embarked from Melbourne on the Demosthenes and in early 1917 he was posted to the 4th Machine Gun Company in France. He served through the war without major incident, although he was hospitalised with illness in early 1919. He returned to Melbourne on May 18th 1919, disembarking from the Armagh.
