Biography

Francis Hales Hill was born in was born in Ballarat and was a Plasterer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 9 July 1915 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. . In March 1916, while in Egypt, he was transferred to the 46th Battalion and moved to France in June. Aside from a bout of tonsillitis in September 1916, his service record indicates he served through the war without major illness or injury. After the war he returned to Australia on the Warwickshire, disembarking at Melbourne on May 28th 1919.
