Biography

William James Grainger (SN 4507) was born in Waterloo, near Beaufort, and attended the Redan State School in Ballarat. He was a 24 year old groom when he enlisted on July 19th 1915. He left Australia in January 1916 aboard the Themistocles to serve with the 58th Infantry Battalion although he later transferred to the 15th Machine Gun Company. He was killed in action at Le Transloy on February 14th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
