Charles Royal Nice was born in Ballarat and was a Grocer by trade when he enlisted in the 7th Battalion, 13th Reinforcement on 9 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. He sailed first to England before joining the 7th Battalion in France in April 1916. On August 19th he was wounded, suffering shell shock, but was able to rejoin his battalion in Belgium three weeks later. He then served through the rest of the war without major mishap. He returned to Australia on the City of Poona, reaching Melbourne on May 14th 1919.
