Biography

William Anstee (SN 186) was born in Happy Valley, near Linton, and educated at Skipton then Dana Street State Schools. He was 26 year old, single and working as a carpenter when he enlisted on August 17th 1914. He embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th as part of the first Anzac fleet. He was promoted to Corporal and further promoted to Sergeant. He served on Gallipoli with the 8th Battalion until the final stages when he was killed on November 24th 1915. He was 28 years of age and is buried in the Ari Burnu Cemetery at the northern end of Anzac Cove.
