Biography

William Bennett Quayle (SN 4294) was born in Ballarat and attended the Urquhart Street State School. While working as a fellmonger, aged 19, he enlisted in the 14th Infantry Battalion on July 15th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne in late December on board the Demosthenes and, soon after arrival in Egypt, he was transferred to the 4th Pioneers Battalion. He reached France in June 1916 but on 24th November 1916 he was killed in action near Albert, and is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Les Bouefs, France.
