His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 29 December 1915, stopped for a time in Egypt then in June 1916 joined the 14th Battalion in France. On April 11th 1917 he was reported as æmissing in action' at Bullecourt, but a German list dated June 16th 1917 confirmed that he had been captured and interned at the Dulmen Camp in Germany.
