Bertie Mason was a single 30 year old engine driver at the time of his enlistment on the 10th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on the 16th of October 1915.
On the 9th of August 1916, Bertie was wounded in action with gunshot wounds to his right ankle and left thigh. He was transferred to England on the 18th of September 1916, and was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth on the 19th of September with an amputated foot. On the 21st of September 1918, Bertie was promoted to Corporal.
Bertie returned to Australia on the 24th of November 1919, and was discharged on the 23rd of January 1920.
