Roy Stanley O’Connor (SN 2954) born in Ballarat, was an18 year old pottery worker when he enlisted in Ballarat in mid-1915. As a reinforcement for the 7th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Star of Victoria on September 10th but went absent without leave at Fremantle a week later. After 28 days detention he re-embarked aboard the Hororata and sailed to Egypt before transferring to the 5th Pioneer Battalion and moving to France in June 1916. His service then became tumultuous, being marked by numerous discipline charges resulting in a sentence of imprisonment. When he did rejoin his unit in France, he was seriously wounded on September 30th 1917, suffering severe wounds to his back, chest and arms. He was evacuated to hospital in England but even during his recovery he faced further discipline charges. At the war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Sardinia and was discharged ‘medically unfit, wounded’ on February 3rd 1919.
