Biography

Robert Royston (Roy) Marshall (SN 4257) was born at Clear Lake but attended Queen Street State School in Ballarat. On July 10th 1915 he enlisted at Ballarat as a 22 year old, unmarried farmer. He joined the 7th Infantry Battalion and embarked for overseas service in late December on board the Demosthenes, reaching France in April 1916. Before he could be deployed to the front, he was admitted to hospital with mumps, and finally joined his unit in action in June. He was promoted to Lance Corporal at the end of November but was again admitted to hospital two weeks later. He died of appendicitis in the 16th General Hospital at Rouen on January 12th 1917, and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Roy R. Marshall.
