Biography

Alfred (Alf) Roy McConnell (SN 2711) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Humffray Street State School. He was an 18 year old plumber when he enlisted on 12th July 1915. He joined the 24th Infantry Battalion and sailed for the battlefields in late October on board the Ulysses. He suffered a gunshot wound to his head and back in August 1916 and was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit in France in March 1917 and was promoted to Lance Corporal. Just 20 years of age, he was killed in action at Menin Road on September 20th 1917 and is buried in the New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Alf R. McConnell.
