Biography

William Thomas Gerrett (SN 4198) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old carpenter when he enlisted on July 19th 1915. On December 29th he embarked aboard the Demosthenes and sailed to Egypt as a reinforcement for the 14th Infantry Battalion. Whilst in Egypt he was hospitalised for several weeks suffering from dysentery. In June 1916 he reached the battlefields of France and on August 7th he suffered gunshot wounds to his face and right leg, necessitating evacuation to hospital in England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He left England on August 31st 1916 aboard the Marama, reached Melbourne on October 17th and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on February 5th 1917.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Thomas W. Gerritt.
