Biography

William Stanislaus Davies (SN 4040) born in Ballarat, was a 24 year old mining contractor when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 12th 1916. His service record indicates that he had some service since July 1915. He embarked aboard the Warilda on May 25th. Serving with the 2nd Tunnelling Company, his service came under notice, and he was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal. While he was not awarded the DCM, at war’s end he was Mentioned in Despatches by General Sir Douglas Haig. He returned to Australia aboard the Mahia, disembarked at Melbourne on July 17th 1919 and was discharged on August 31st.
