Biography

Hiram Rutherford (SN 3885) was born in Sunbury, but educated at Ballarat High School. The 20 year old, unmarried civil servant enlisted on July 16th 1915. He was posted to the 46th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in late November on board the Ceramic. After three months training in Egypt, he arrived in France in June 1916. On April 11th 1917 he was killed during the fighting at Bullecourt, has no known grave, and is listed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
