John Ion (Lt.) was born in Liverpool U.K. and was 35 years old, and was a permanent soldier, married to Alberta, when he enlisted in the A.I.F. as a Lieutenant on July 14th 1915. He was allocated to the 32nd Infantry Battalion and sailed from Fremantle in November on board the Katuna. He was severely wounded at Fromelles on July 19th 1916 and was evacuated to hospital but died of his wounds on July 25th 1916. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
