Biography

John Ion (Lt.) was born in England but grew up in Ballarat where he attended the Queen Street State School. Married to Alberta, he was a member of the Ballarat Fire Brigade but his occupation was listed as drill instructor when he enlisted in Adelaide at the rank of lieutenant in August 1915. He was serving with the 32nd Infantry Battalion when he took part in the tragic charge at Fromelles on July 19th 1916. He was seriously wounded in this action and died of his wounds six days later on July 25th , aged 39 years. He is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery on France.
