Bertha Watson Wallace was born in 1881 at Creswick to parents John and Mary Jane née Brawn. On 2 November 1914, Bertha, already a member of the Victorian Trained Nurses Association, enrolled with the Australian Army Nursing Service. Prior to her enlistment, she had spent three years training at the Ballarat District Hospital, where she obtained a number of certificates for efficiency in medical and surgical nursing and held positions at this hospital, including Sister-in-Charge. Bertha, along with fellow nurse, Bertha McKinnell embarked at Melbourne, Victoria with No.1 Australian General Hospital (November 1914) aboard Kyarra on 5 December 1914. The ship sailed to Brisbane, Queensland where another 11 nurses boarded and embarked on 21 December 1914. Arriving in Egypt on 14 January 1915, the 1st Australian General Hospital was accommodated in a building and tents at Heliopolis, on the outskirts of Cairo. The building was large and grand, having previously been the Heliopolis Palace Hotel. On 23 September 1915 Bertha was detached for duty to the Military Hospital, Bagthorpe in England. On 17 January 1917, Sister Wallace had begun duty at Harefield House Hospital (No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital), Harefield, London. On 14 June 1917, in England, Bertha married Captain John Pritchard (AIF), a South African born solicitor. Upon her marriage, Bertha was required to resign from her position. On 23 May 1918 Bertha gave birth to the couple's son, Charles John Pritchard and the family remained in England until 7 November, 1919 when Captain Pritchard, Bertha and young Charles all returned to Australia aboard Marathon. The family then resided in New South Wales and were living in Kingsford prior to Bertha's death at Paddington on 25 May, 1955. Bertha was buried at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Matraville, Randwick City, New South Wales. Sister Wallace is remembered on the Ballarat Base Hospital Nurses, WW1 Honour Board, Ballarat, Victoria.
