Biography

Private Jack Watson, a Ballarat-born blacksmith, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914 at the age of 19. On 25 April 1915 he received a gunshot wound to the toe and was sent to the 1st Australian General Hospital until he was able to re-join his unit on 17 September 1915. He embarked aboard the HT Ivernia to join the British Expeditionary Force on 21 June 1916 before marching out to join the 58th Battalion at Etaples, France.

He then transferred to the 7th Reinforcements as of 23 July 1918 before finally returning to Australia on 8 May 1919.
