Florence Vines was born in Geelong but did her nursing training at the Ballarat Base Hospital. She was 31 when she joined the Australian Army Nursing Service on July 17th 1915. During her service she served aboard several ships including the Orsova, the Mooltan and the Wiltshire and also at a hospital at Salonika, Greece. Failing health caused her to be returned home aboard the Wiltshire and her position was terminated on August 6th 1918 due to dysentery.
