Annie Beatrice Lee-Brown was born at Amherst nearTalbot, Victoria on 13 December 1875 to Lee Brown and Jane née Laver. Annie trained as a nurse at the Ballarat District Hospital, gained her Hospital Certificate through the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses Association and worked as a Sister at the St Arnaud Hospital for a number of years. She was single and 36 years old at the time of her enlistment at Melbourne on 11 Mar 1915. She was assigned to 1st Australian General Hospital and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Wandilla on the 17 June 1915.
Annie spent eleven months in Egypt and six months in France before the effects of a gastric ulcer saw her return to Australia on the 8 March 1917, on board Kanowna.
Annie died on 5 December 1941 and her obituary appeared in The Argus on Saturday, 6 December 1941, page 3 -"The death occurred yesterday morning after a short illness of Sister Bea Lee-Brown, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Lee-Brown, formerly of Kimbolton, Cope Cope. Sister Lee-Brown was well known in Australia and England. With her sister the late Olive Lee-Brown she served in the last war in Egypt and later in France at No 1 AGH at Rouen and St Pol. Just before her illness she was engaged in Red Cross and ACF work specialising in despatch of books for the troops abroad. The funeral will take place this morning to Springvale Crematorium."
Her sister, Olive Loveday Lee-Brown and her brother, Lee Harold Brown also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
