Sister Sarah Bell was born in Scarsdale and working as a nurse when she enlisted in the No. 8 Section Sea Transport Australian Army Medical Corps at the age of 33. Her unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board R.M.S. Kashgar on 2 September 1916. Assigned to the AANS Sea Transport Section she served on the nursing staff of troop and hospital ships Wandilla, Ulysses and Nestor. She was discharged from the AANS in late 1917 but re-enlisted on February 7th 1918 and did further voyages on the Nestor and the Gaika. Towards the end of 1918 she embarked once again, aboard the Wyreema which was recalled when the war ended. She was discharged on January 28th 1919.
