Biography

Tessa Guy Dunn RRC (Sister) was born in Ballarat and trained as a nurse at the Ballarat Base Hospital. On December 13th 1914, aged 35, she joined the Australian Army Nursing Service. Her first role in 1915 was transport duty on return voyages to Egypt aboard the Themistocles then the Ulysses. In April 1916 she joined the 1st Australian General Hospital in France and in 1917 she was Mentioned in Despatches by Sir William Birdwood for conspicuous service. She was also awarded the Royal Red Cross. Her health deteriorated and she was returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes, disembarking on September 24th 1917 and her position was terminated on Christmas Day ‘medically unfit, gastritis’.
