Emily Pauline Cherry (Ireland) was born in Ballarat and was a Nurse when she enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 18 May 1917 at the age of 25. Her unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Mooltan on 12 June 1917. Upon reaching Suez she was transferred to the 60th British General Hospital at Salonika, suffering from rheumatic fever. It was determined she was fit only for home duties or light duties, so she was returned to Australia on the Kanowna, disembarking November 1917. She was discharged from the AANS in December 1918 and in 1920 she married Charles Alexander Ireland.
