Gertrude Evelyn Munro was born in Alfredton where she attended the Alfredton State School and then Queens College, Ballarat. She was single and 34 years old when she enlisted as a Sister in the Australian Army Nursing Service on August 22nd 1916. She was posted to the 42nd General Hospital at Salonika in Greece, supporting the British Forces fighting in Turkey. She died of malaria and pneumonia on October 10th 1918, and is the only Australian buried in the Mikra British Cemetery, Kalimaria, Greece.
