Biography

Born in 1887 at Lake Charm, Kerang, Victoria, Mary Maria Mitchell was the daughter of James Mitchell and Jane née Campbell.
Mary was a 29 year old Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Services when she enlisted with the AIF on 6 June 1917. Mary embarked on 12 June 1917 from Melbourne aboard Mooltan and disembarked at Suez on 19 July 1917. She joined the 66th General Hospital at Salonika for duty on 30 July 1917. Three months later, Mary had proceeded to join the 52nd General Hospital. On 14 Feb 1918 she was admitted to hospital with a medical condition and spent a number of weeks at the Red Cross Convalescent Home. On 10 April 1918 an enquiry held by the Medical Board determined that Nurse Mitchell was unfit for general service both abroad and at home for at least six months. The Board found that the disability although not contracted in the service, was aggravated by Active Service conditions in Macedonia and recommended Nurse Mary Mitchell be invalided to Australia. On 17 April, Mary embarked for Egypt aboard Gorgon disembarking at Port Said before boarding Karoola at Salonika en route to Australia. She was discharged as medically unfit on 17 September 1918. Mary did not marry and died on 17 June 1967 in Victoria.
