Staff Nurse, Elizabeth Helen MacDonald, known as Lisette was born about 1878 in the New Hebrides. She was the daughter of Rev Dr Daniel MacDonald, a missionary in the New Hebrides and Elizabeth Keir née Geddie. Her father also served as a Chaplain in the AlF in 1916 at the age of 70 years.
Lisette trained as a nurse for 3 years at the Ballarat District Hospital prior to joining the Australian Army Medical Corps on 14 April 1916. She was 38 years old when she enlisted for overseas service in India with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 14 June 1917, embarking on 30 June 1917 from Melbourne per Somali. She arrived in Bombay, India on 30 July 1917 and was immediately posted for duty to the Heslop War Hospital, Secunderabad, India. Lisette was invalided to Australia via South Africa, on 19 February 1918 aboard Devanha, disembarking at Cape Town to await continuation of her voyage. She was accommodated at Coghill's Hotel, Wynberg until she boarded the Osterley on 20 March 1918 bound for Australia. Staff Nurse MacDonald was discharged on 6 April 1918 as Medically unfit. Lisette did not marry and died at Brighton, Victoria on 6 September 1968 aged 92 years. She was cremated on 10 September 1968 at the Necropolis, Springvale and her ashes were scattered within the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.
