Biography

Jack Edward Farckens (SN 405) was born in Ballarat and was a 27 year old shoeing smith when he enlisted on August 27th 1914. Assigned to the 4th Light Horse Regiment he embarked aboard the Wiltshire destined for service at Gallipoli. He was wounded in action (date not recorded) and suffered a fractured leg. He was evacuated to England before being returned to Australia aboard the Wandilla. He reached Melbourne on January 14th 1916, and underwent further treatment until he was discharged medically unfit on November 2nd 1916.

His brothers Robert and Harold also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
