Jack Edward Farkens, born in Ballarat, single and a Shoeing Smith enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment on 18 August 1914 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A18 Wiltshire on 19 October 1914. He was promoted to a Farrier Sergeant before receiving his discharge as æmedically unfit' on 2 November 1916.
