Biography

David Harold Stevenson (SN 4824A) was born at Haddon, west of Ballarat, and was a 24 year old textile warper when he enlisted on March 17th 1917. Three weeks later he sailed from Melbourne aboard the Euripides, and in September he joined the 21st Infantry Battalion in France. On May 3rd 1917 he suffered a shrapnel wound to the head and was evacuated to hospital in England. While recovering he went absent without leave for three days, the first of several AWL charges in his service record. He rejoined his unit on the battlefield in August, but on October 4th at Broodseinde in Belgium, he sustained a shrapnel wound to his ankle that again saw him evacuated to hospital in England. He had further periods of being absent without leave before December when he was charged with ‘using obscene language in a public place’. In January 1919 he embarked from England aboard the City of York, reached Melbourne on February 27th and was discharged in April 1919.

One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 1112.
