George Elliot Finnis (SN 3185) was born in Ballarat but was an 18 year old, single salesman in Melbourne when he enlisted on March 23rd 1915. He joined the 6th Field Ambulance and left Melbourne in June aboard the Ajana to sale to Egypt. While in Egypt he became ill and was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis and underwent surgery for an abdominal obstruction. The operation appeared successful, but infection set in, and he died on 27th January 1916. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He was 19 years of age.

His brother Gerard also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
