Richard Jackson (SN 3307) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old hod carrier when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 20th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 5th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on October 11th aboard the Nestor and sailed to Egypt. In March 1916 he reached the battlefields of France. In June he was transferred to the 5th Field Company Engineers and aside from some short periods of illness he served safely through the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Trasos Montes, disembarked at Melbourne on May 22nd 1919 and was discharged on July 15th.
His brother Wilfred also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
