Richard Jackson was born in Ballarat and was a Hod Carrier by trade when he enlisted in the 5th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 13 July 1915 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October 1915. He disembarked briefly at Alexandria, Egypt, before proceeding to France in March 1916. Apart from a couple of bouts of minor illness, he came through the war physically unscathed and returned home on the Trasos Montes, disembarking at Melbourne on Mat 22nd 1919.
