Cyril Campbell (SN 684) born at Camperdown, was a 20 year old waiter when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 18th 1914 . He embarked aboard the Hororata on October 21st and sailed to Egypt. On May 18th 1915 he came ashore at Gallipoli to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion. After the Gallipoli campaign he moved to France in March 1916 and while he avoided battle wounds, he was hospitalised with jaundice and then had an extended stay at Bulford Hospital in England. He was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Port Sydney, disembarked at Melbourne on December 2nd 1918 and was discharged on January 31st 1919. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2 with service number V147390.
His half brother Robert Hession also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
