Biography

Walter Leslie Bailey (SN 192/Lt.) from Nicholson Street, Ballarat, attended the Humffray Street State School. He was an electrician, 24 years of age, when he enlisted on July 14th 1915. He trained at the Showgrounds in Melbourne with the 29th Battalion before embarking aboard the Ascanius on November 10th. In March 1916, while in Egypt, he was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. In June he reached France and in January 1917 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. On May 9th 1918 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen and died of his wounds the following day. He was 26 years of age and is buried in the Vigncourt British Cemetery. He is remembered on the honour boards of the Humffray Street State School and St. Paul’s Church.

His brother Thomas also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
