Biography

Thomas Slight Bailey (SN 2779) from Nicholson Street, Ballarat, attended the Humffray Street State School. He was a 22-year-old blacksmith when he enlisted on June 29th 1915. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Argyllshire and sailed to Egypt where he was assigned to the 54th Battalion. He reached France in late June 1916 but on October 15th 1917, near Passchendaele in Belgium, he was overcome by mustard gas. He was evacuated to a casualty clearing station for treatment but died two days later. He was 24 years of age and is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. He is remembered on the honour boards of the Humffray Street State School and St. Paul’s Church.

His brother Walter also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
