Charles Thomas Henderson (SN 6041) born at Windermere near Ballarat, was a 19 year old farmer when he enlisted in Learmonth on April 18th 1916. On July 28th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and by November he had reached France to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. During early 1917 he was troubled by mumps then influenza, but on July 7th he stood on a nail while running in a Brigade Sports event. The nail pierced his big toe and became infected resulting in extended hospitalisation. Being unable to put weight on his foot he was returned to Australia aboard the Borda, disembarked at Melbourne on November 21st 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on January 18th 1918.

His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
