John (Jock) William Henderson (SN 420) born at Windermere near Ballarat, was a 19 year old farmer when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 24th 1914. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the Wiltshire on October 20th and sailed to Egypt where he continued training with the 4th Light Horse Regiment. He saw action at Gallipoli from May 1915 until illness forced his evacuation in October, to Gibraltar then to England. Once recovered he was moved to France in August 1916 to serve with the 1st Anzac Light Horse Regiment. In November 1917 he was transferred to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade and served out the final year of the war. He was granted special ‘1914 leave’ and returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton, disembarked at Melbourne on Christmas Day 1918 and was discharged on February 23rd 1919.

His brother Charles also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
