Biography

John æJock' William Henderson was born in Ballarat and a Farmer when he enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment on 24 August 1914 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A18 Wiltshire on 19 October 1914. On 15 October 1915, he was admitted to General Hospital in Gibraltar and transferred to General Hospital No. 3 in London on Christmas Day 1915 for nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). On 15 September 1916 he transferred to the 1st Anzac Army Corps Light Horse Regiment from the 4th Light Horse and later transferred to the 2nd Anzac Army Corps Australian General Base Depot.

On 9 October 1917 he rejoined his unit and received another transfer to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade where he was appointed the rank of Driver. He was given special 1914 leave and returned to Australia on 13 October 1918.
