Biography

Michael James Harbourne (SN 2410) was born in Baltinglas, Ireland, but was farming near Windermere when he enlisted on September 27th 1916. He joined the 39th Battalion and sailed from Melbourne on board the Port Lincoln in October, bound for the battlefields of the Western Front. He was killed in action near Mont St. Quentin, France, on September 10th 1918. He was 21 years of age and is buried in the Cerisy-Gailly French National Cemetery, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Michael J. Harbourur, as does the Windermere and Cardigan Roll of Honour.

One of a number of soldiers with multiple entries in the original register, he is also recognised at Tree 2545.
