Born in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, Ireland, Michael James Harbourne was a single 19 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat, Victoria on the 27th of September 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on the 20th of October 1916.
On the 10th of September 1918, Michael James Harbourne was killed in action in Peronne, France. He is buried at the Cerisy-Gailly French National Cemetery (Plot I, Row E, Grave No. 13), France. He was 21 years old.
