Charles Stanley Coltman (Major) was born in Ballarat and was educated at the Dana Street State School and Grenville College. He was a 37 year old widower, working as a company manager in Sydney when he enlisted in August 1914, having previously served in the Boer War. While serving with the 4th Battalion at Gallipoli his gallantry earned him the Military Cross. He was wounded in action in May 1915 and evacuated to hospital in Egypt. Upon his return to Gallipoli he transferred to the 1st Battalion. After the Gallipoli evacuation he was reported ill with influenza at Tel el Kebir on December 29th 1915, and was transferred to the 2nd General Hospital in Cairo where he died of pneumonia on the January 6th 1916. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
His brother Percy Coltman also served in the AIF. He was killed at Poziers in August 1916 and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
