Biography

John Halse (SN 3511) born in Ballarat, was a married 33 year old carter when he enlisted in Adelaide on August 19th 1915. He embarked from Adelaide aboard the Borda on January 12th 1916. In April he joined the 2nd Division Ammunition Column in France. His capacity to serve was limited by a hernia and an old foot injury, to the point he was assessed as unfit for active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton, disembarked on December 11th 1917 and was discharged on December 27th ‘medically unfit’.

His brother Thomas also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
