Biography

Maurice Albert Thistlethwaite (SN 458) was born in Koroit and attended the Koroit State School. He was a 19 year old shearer when he enlisted in Warrnambool on August 19th 1914. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on the Benalla in October. He served at Gallipoli until illness forced his evacuation in August 1915. He eventually rejoined his unit in France in December 1916. On April 2nd 1918 he died of wounds suffered at Wijtschate, Belgium, and is buried in Irish House Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium.
His brother George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
