Biography

George Thomas Thistlethwaite (SN 1782) was born in Koroit, but enlisted in Ballarat on January 11th 1915. He was a painter, 22 years old and single. He joined the 8th Infantry Battalion and embarked on the Hororata
for active service on April 17th. He served at Gallipoli from late July 1915 then, while in Egypt, was transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion which he joined in France in June 1916. On October 13th 1917 he died of wounds received at Poelcappelle, and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
His brother Maurice also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
