Herbert Lindley Hicks (SN 8023) born at Ballarat, was a 25 year old railway fireman when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 29th 1915. He embarked aboard the Ascanius on November 10th first to Egypt then to France in June 1916. He served there with the 28th Company Australian Service Corps until April 1918 when he was transferred to the 5th Division Train. He completed his service without significant harm and returned to Australia aboard the Kildonian Castle, disembarked at Melbourne on May 7th 1919 and was discharged on June 29th.
His brother Arthur also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
