Biography

Wilfred Gilchrist Dalzell (SN 3725) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old draper when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 9th 1915. Assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked aboard the Ceramic on November 23rd and sailed to Egypt where he was transferred to the 46th Battalion. In June 1916 he reached France for service on the Western Front. In April 1917 he was transferred to the 66th Battalion and while he avoided battle wounds, he was frequently hospitalised with illnesses such as influenza and tonsilitis. He was returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles, disembarked at Melbourne on December 31st 1917 and was discharged on February 5th 1918 ‘medically unfit, tuberculosis of the lungs’.

His brother Frederick also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as W. G. Dalzell.
