Frederick William Dalzell (SN 11112) born at Mount Clear, was a 29 year old engine driver when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 9th 1915. He trained with the Australian Army Medical Corps before embarking aboard the Clan Macgillivray on May 4th to sail via Egypt to England. He had further training in England before he was assigned to the 7th Field Ambulance in France in October 1917. He came safely through the war and returned to Australia on the Beltana, disembarked at Melbourne on July 19th 1919 and was discharged on September 15th.
His brother Wilfred also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as F. W. Dalzell.
