Biography

Hugh Dyring MM (SN 761) born in Ballarat, was a 20 year od traveller when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 17th 1914. With the 5th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Orvieto on October 20th and sailed to Egypt ahead of the Gallipoli landing. In May 1915 he suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and was evacuated from Gallipoli. From March 1916 he served in France with the 23rd Battalion and the 6th Light Trench Mortar Battery and the highlight of his service there was the award of a Military Medal for bravery in the field. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Leicestershire,/em> disembarked at Melbourne on January 22nd 1919 and was discharged on March 23rd.

His brother Edgar also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
